Proposed “Junk Fee” Reform Would Force Price Transparency in Illinois

I’ve co-sponsored legislation with Sen. Omar Aquino (D-Chicago) to put an end to the unfair practice of surprise “junk fees” that hit consumers at the very end of a purchase.

This bill would require that all mandatory fees be included in the upfront advertised price — whether for concert tickets, airline fares, rental housing, or other purchases. Companies could still charge legitimate fees, but they’d have to disclose them before customers reach the checkout screen.

As I’ve said, it’s not fair when fees are “squeezed in” at the last minute. Our legislation ensures Illinois residents can see the full cost of what they’re buying, right from the start.

The proposal also strengthens enforcement by giving the Attorney General’s office expanded authority to go after businesses that continue to hide fees. Attorney General Kwame Raoul has joined consumer advocates in supporting this effort, noting that junk fees erode public trust and hurt honest businesses.

This Illinois effort mirrors a broader national push to stop surprise charges and bring more transparency to the marketplace.
